Fifth grade has been working on an "Exemplary Composers" unit in order to prepare for a field trip to the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall to see the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra perform a children's concert - "America, the Beautiful."
This was my attempt of meeting my school's SLO goal of reading comprehension. The objective was for students to read information about time periods and composers in order to learn new information. Students really did enjoy seeing the final product of their hard work. I had to assemble the body parts due to a lack of time to get it done during music class.

Here is an example of a finished project! The faces are comprised of half of the head of each composer from the time period.

Week One of the unit - Students were assigned to groups and read information about musical time periods in order to create the body of the project. Presentations were made to classmates.
Due to MANY snow days/delays one class didn't get a chance to do the Time Period Man project. Instead, they got to do a one lesson crash-course using the website www.classicsforkids.com to answer questions about the composers. After answering questions, the students were able to go back and "HEAR THE MUSIC" of each composer using headphones.
Week 3 of the unit - Time Period Groups were split into smaller groups in order to read biographies about their assigned composers. Information was displayed on the leg of the project and presented to the class.
Each composer's listening piece is displayed on the matching hand of the project. My original idea was for the students to create and perform a movement activity for the music of their composer. Due to lack of time and the fact that it was hard to hear enough of the music, the students played their music in the background during their composer presentation of information.
